So we are doing SXSW again this year.
We spent most of monday getting in our hotel getting badges etc/
We did see
Holy esque at a Scottish Interactive promo party
and Wonder Villians who were excellent, Rams Pocket Radio pretty good and walked out of Unkwn at the Creative Belfast party at latitude.
time to start againJaneInMAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01799790795219591771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4632044949502485085.post-12305267457303513992013-03-10T13:20:00.001-07:002013-03-11T11:23:11.543-07:00A plethora of gigsSo I have been remiss, or perhaps saving everyone from me crowing in glee about the wonderful concerts you may have missed.
The Autumn Owl concert atThe Bell In Hand concert was a disorganized mess, but that was the organizers. Not the bands. We bumped into the band beforehand and had a nice chat. They are very down to earth grounded and friendly guys.
When the music eventually started the first band was pretty ok in your local guy having fun kind of way but as support bands go it was definitively unoffensive. Surprisingly the sound was fine, not your world class sound but not distorted, unbalanced or feeding back oh well minimally feeding back.
Autumn Owls came on and despite having the normal UK scramble to deal withe the US situation took not so long to set up. When the band started I immediately remembered why this band impressed me at SXSW. The sound has depth and the lyrics while not clear come over as meaningful. Slightly moody intricate and some decent guitar and drum rhythm. We took a couple of videos of the truncated set and definitely thought this was a impressive and worthwhile night. But the Bruins and the Garden suck. By the way this was $5 a person.

So next night was Alt-J,to say this band has risen quickly is an understatement. Getting into the Paradise it became clear this crowd left a little to be desired when three peoples squeezed into the two person space next to me and all around people started posturing about being there early and being super fans -yuck.
The support band Hundred Waters were ok, but nothing too great, however they did not deserve the disrespectful talking through their quieter songs. When Alt-j came on by now either side of us people were crowding in, I mean if you want to be so physically close tome for so long at least buy me dinner, lol. But seriously it's physics only one person can exist in a physical space at one time. As to the music, the sound was ok if a little spotty at the start, but the band seemed aloof without the warmth of the concert last October and then there was the talking through quiet songs and singing along at full voice, for goodness sake I paid to hear the band sing not you. A decent concert but not one I left feeling huge love for.

Tuesday was Citizens! at Brighton Music Hall, the support was Grayshot a band I hadn't heard of and even more amazingly had no profile on last.fm so I was left fearing the worst that this was a no name local band. But very thankfully not Grayshot turned out to be a decent band , some guitar songs some with keyboards. I did shoot one video as I wanted some memory of their act.

Now Citizens! a band who embrace pop, produced by Alex Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand and with links to the now defunct UK indie band Official Secrets Act. This was fun, unashamed pop fun, listen to their songs and you just want to dance. Along with their rant before True Romance where they let us now YouTube has placed the video under age restriction because of gay couples kissing - what is going on.
Very low attendance but huge love for this band, no pretension but total desire to have fun. Total win for this gig, such fun- why weren't you there?

Wednesday and another change of pace at Great Scott. first band female vocalist playing with loops, not bad would not go out to see her but I wouldn't run shrieking either.
The second band was night beds and a swarm of people were there fortnight beds. Warming up singing Oliver James by fleet foxes will say everything about this band. Decent guitar tracks with a interesting falsetto vocal. We liked this and have a couple of videos.

Indians came on, the eponymous Indians and the two extra women helping him out.this has wonderful vocal skills and a warming charm, we recorded I am haunted which is breathtaking.

Great gig two bands worth seeing for $10 you have to love supporting up and coming bands.
Thursday night and braving the snow we went to Church to see Kodaline a band you keep hearing about from everyone who wants to say who is up and coming.
Kodaline are indie folk with yet another male reaching for and hitting high notes to evoke emotion. Oh and asI previously said Fromm Dublin Ireland, you have got to love the wealth of Irish bands around currently. That being said I like Kodaline, their songs have substance and you definitely get the idea that they can play their instruments. The two hits were impressive but their accapella Sam cook cover was well done and well received.
The wonder is that this must see show was free, can you say bargain.

And we aren't even close to being done
there are four extremely interesting and musically excellent bands playing Boston in the near future all with cheap and in one case free tickets.
So go get them now!
Who?
First autumn Owls play The Bell In Hand Tavern in Faneuil Hall area on Thursday the 28th - $5 its a bargain

Then Kodaline play Church in a Radio BDC +1 gig on March 7th, interesting young band and the concert is free, why would you not go?

Get tickets here

then Little Green Cars play The Sinclair March 23rd, slightly folk centred this is another band to listen to.

Funeral Suits who are weird and wonderful play Cafe 369 on March 25th. We wanted to go to Canada to see them we liked them so much but Cafe 369 is so much closer.

So much Irish, so much good music. I will be at all four concerts - will you?

We just saw three bands from Thursday through Sunday, again all vastly different

First The spinto Band, this band is personable and put on a nice show in a great venue on thursday. but it is just so sad to see such a meager turn out and muted response. I seriously wonder if they should just call it a day and start day jobs much as they charmed. Unfortunately the two local support bands Nassy and yale, massachusetts were neither talented or charming oh and their fans were pretty foul to watch as well.

Next Benjamin Francis Leftwich played a free show for Radio BDC in the back room of Moksa on Friday 22nd. He is a wonderful charming act - though he should realise he supported The Jezebels when last he played not Imagine Dragons who were the support. But why would you come to see this singer song writer if you want to talk through his show? STFU - really when a quiet act is playing have the decency to just SHUT UP.
Benjamin Francis Leftwich Snowship Naga Cambridge Boston 22nd February 2013

Next Beach Fossils played a sold out show at TTs on Sunday the 24th. Support bands Orca Orca and burgularly years both put on a decent show. The Last two times Beach fossils played Boston they played Great Scott with Warpaint and Javelin and craft Spells.
Now it seems the crowd is very different, it used to be people danced and had a good time, last night it was a mosh pit of fury, a bit disconcerting when you consider the music they play is laid back danceable music.
It would be nice if some of those folks had tried moving back as well as forward, as moving through the speakers as they shoved really was a physical impossibility and it is pretty freaky to relaise there is someone standing under your feet, when you are right against teh stage and cant move forward an inch.
But still a nice show, wild energetic and very well played.

Hopefully I will grab a few moments next to write about the next shows worth seeing.JaneInMAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01799790795219591771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4632044949502485085.post-23868993908287017082013-01-26T12:29:00.002-08:002013-01-26T12:43:49.963-08:00Palma Violets don't suck!So first gig of the year was Palma Violets at The Middle East Upstairs. After suffering through Boston's own New Highway Hymnal Palma Violets weeon stage about 10:20. The vibe is punk rock but there are two tour guys keeping everything running plus a merch guy so someone is putting every effort into this trip going well.

This band can play live though, being good on stage isn't just technical excellence, which can come over as cold and boring but an intangible energy and chemistry.
The energy which Chilli exuded was tangible and energising, I couldn't stop smiling and moving.
The band is so new that apart from the single hardly any songs are available to listen to but despite the fact that no-one knew the tracks that did not stop everyone really getting into the music.
When they played "best of Friends" the audience responded well. The whole vibe was energised and enthused.
I just want to see this band play more and I can't wait for the album to come out.
We are hoping the offer from Will to get us onto the guest list for Sunday when they support Titus Andronicus will come through and we get another chance to see them play.

So just to elaborate from the title Palma Violets not only do not suck like some of the well documented bands other feeble bloggers promote this band are really great live and I know that their time in small clubs is going to be so fleeting. What a great band.
This is where I differ from nearly every blog in Boston.
Next week an extremely exciting new band, Palma Violets are playing The Middle East Upstairs, January 22nd.
The BBC have touted Palma Violets as one of the Sounds of 2013. So is the band all hype? I have only one question for anyone, the tickets for Tuesday night are $10, for $10 why would you NOT go and see who this band is. The information available is minimal but the number of people that have raved about the power and energy of this young band are mounting up. Some of the sound reminds me of The Vaccines but I do not mean to demean this band. The Vaccines give a lackluster live performance which left me cold to the bone so I hope this band will instead make me energized.
Then on Saturday 26th January we get Ra Ra Riot playing their new album. I am not sure I follow the band on their new path but they have always given a good live show and in Hartford CT in December that still held true so it should be a good concert.

now for a quick run down of what we are looking for in 2013 so far.

15th March at long last The Maccabees play Boston and as a headliner. You have to love the Maccabees and this is an excellent opportunity to see them.

21st February has The Spinto Band at Great Scott, great venue - so so band - we want to show some support.

24th February Beach Fossils at TT's, I loved seeing this band when they played Great Scott with Warpaint and the new album is good so this is a must see.

We go to the 2nd March Alt-J show, why some people call them a new band astounds me but the sound at the Paradise is great and even despite the hipsters this is a good band.
5th March a british band called Citizens! play Brighton Music Hall, this band are intersting and its time to see them at a small venue while you can.
9th march the scottish band Veronica Falls play Great Scott. as a band Veronica Falls are pretty interesting BUT the real interest here is Cheatahs, recently signed to Wichita and much talked about.

March 11th the cruelest trick ever played on scottish music fans happens when Django Django play the Paradise and PAWS play Great Scott (wehavepaws.com, @wehavepaws) who are pretty ungoogleable. Go see one, whichever you choose you will see a great band and miss a great band. Damn that sucks.

March 23rd Little Green Cars from Dublin, Ireland play The Sinclair, I am hearing only great things about this band.

April 3rd we go down to Rhode Island to see frightened Rabbit play Fete because I hate House of Blues with a passion, new album is out soon thank goodness, FR are nearly as good as The Twilight Sad while not being on the same playing field.

Daughter play the Sinclair on May 4th , another interesting British band to watch for while they are small.

Telekinesis play Brighton Music Hall on May 10th, BMH sucks but telekinesis knock your socks off.

thats all for now.........

As someone who blogs about music it seems obligatory to post what albums I loved in 2012. I would say this to anyone who releases an album in teh first few months of teh year most people lose track of albums released early in teh year. I personally try to keep track of what is released and I listen to to give myself a fighting chnce. That said
in 2012 some of my favorite albums included:

The Twilight Sad No one can Ever Know
Alt- J - an Awesome Wave
Blood Red Shoes - In Time to voices
Club Smith - appetite for Chivalry
Call the Doctor -
Dog Is Dead - All Our Favourite Stories
delerentos-Little Sparks
General Fiasco- Unfaithfully Yours
Egyptian Hip Hop-Good Don't Sleep
The Futureheads - Rant
Green Day's Trilogy was suprisingly fun uno , Dos, Tre!
mystery jets - Radlands
Maximo Park - the national Health

need I say that seeing Alt-J, The Twilight Sad at Great Scott were both amazing. seeing The Wombats again and catching up was fun too, then throw in the small road trip to see Bombay Bicycle Club there were some good points of this year. Not to forget when Johnny Foreigner eventually managed to make it to Boston about 5 years after we wanted them too.
Lets hope 2013 is better and does not live up to being a year of 13.JaneInMAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01799790795219591771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4632044949502485085.post-29208628428372239352012-11-23T08:23:00.002-08:002012-11-23T08:23:42.953-08:00Mike Scott in Boston and The Sad play BostonI just wanted to throw down some thoughts on teh past week in review.

First I must say how great it is to be lsitening to a couple of new tracks from The Twilght Sad from their Tour EP. Looking at our concert database and our convert photos it become clear its been 5 anbd a half years since we first fell in love
The amazing thing is that during this time the boys have never put out music that was less than amazing and never been less than humble hard working and at times so so self detructive. They should be pushing this tour EP at every turn but yet they keep quiet and trust that people will find their treasures when the music business of today and the oblivious self centredness we see at gigs necessitate pushing people in the right direction. All I can say The Sad should be bigger than Radiohead and I feel so shocked that such talent can be ignored.

We started on Sunday ghoing to see Mike Scott at the Brighton Music Hall, I found Mike when A Girl called Johnny first came out. The concert was half a reading of Mike's autobiography half an acoustic set. To me the self importance and arrogance of Mike Scott puts me off music which could be enjoyable. Steve wickham on the other hand was funny and extremely talented. A good night but not supreme.

Then we have Tuesday, we got to ctach up before hand and also lucky enough to catch a heart wrenchingly beautiful rendition of Nil. Lets face it I am no sap but this version had me totally engrossed and emotionally ravaged.

Errors put on a good show to get the night going before The Sad came on.

Why people have not embraced the new album I have no idea, I loved hearing Alphabet live, Nile was great though not as wonderful as in soundcheck then from Forget The Night Ahead The Sad did a version of At The Burnside which started as a slow burn and layered on powerful guitar and drums to provide a depth around James's wonderful vocal. As I listened I knew I had to thank the sound guy who had managed to keep everything necessary to sow the power and awesomeness that this band can exude when everything falls in place.
How can people not see how seminal and important this band is? I love Alt-J and love the fact they got the Mercury but if The Sad had been nominated (Bad Fat Cat who rarely support the guys the way they should) I really think I would have preferred these boys to win the Mercury an every other award. I say kill Taylor Swift and replace her album in every household with The Sad's music and enrich everyone's aural pleasure.
Emotional powerful violent and beautiful if you don't love this band you have no emotional iq.
I have elaborated about this band so many times but I want everyone to come see them and give these guys money but if you could just not be around us singing out loud like a spaz because at that point you are detritus.
I also hear there may be two tour eps left so grab them while you can and buy merchant and the guys a drink or four.JaneInMAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01799790795219591771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4632044949502485085.post-33262241341505440362012-09-24T20:05:00.000-07:002012-09-25T04:17:46.365-07:00Great Bands that played Boston - part 2To resume (well work occasionally intercedes)

On Saturday Patrick Wolf came to Boston to play the Royale as part of his 10 year Acoustic Tour.Patrick is extremely talented and since leaving home at 16 has been extremely prolific writing many albums all of which refuse to dumb down his emotions or use instruments most people would not correlate with pop music (harp, ukelele viola). The beauty and honesty of these albums may put off some peopel but not his 'Wolf pack'. To be honest I love so many bands I am not fanatical about PW BUT when he comes to play Live and I listen to his music it always astounds me to remember just how good and out there it is.
Taking the tie to revisit his songs and strip them down uncovered beauty and honesty.
The setlist can be seen here and I am not sure what I loved more the beautiful performances or the wonderfully intimate monologues he introduced the songs with.
The lighting was not kind to my camera's ability to catch video but I think the sound quality survived.

after the show we rushed off and saw Dry The River at Brighton Music Hall. The Audience loved the show but maybe I had been spoilt as I felt the band was pushing too hard and the efforts were cliche and overblown, it was fun but it was a poor second to the start of the night.

Sunday was the return of Blood Red Shoes to Boston after way too long.
It is hard to believe that this duo can produce so much power and volume. The Third album In Time to Voices is another example of being brim full of punchy well composed inie perfection well if you love power drums and guitars as I do.

The set was full of old favorites interspersed with great songs from the new album. The vocal was a little low which talking to Steven he did agree that their sound engineer had a heck of a struggle with the acoustics of TT's which seem to sometimes causing issues. Despite that Stephen and Laura put on a strong show. The good news is the duo have a visa for the next year and seem pretty keen on visiting again during that time which would make me very happy.
As noted before Maximo park and Jesus and Mary Chain lived up to my hopes.

Alt-J on the 17th at Great Scott proved no exception. The album has proven to be so different that people are stabbing in the dark for comparisons. Myself I thought of Wild Beasts and Forward Russia! and during their show added These New Puritans. Why? because they dare to go places that others do not, ignore nastiness about the vocal style standing out and use layering and silence to create a building complexity that rewards.
The alt-J show was just a great day from the starting point of non existent traffic going to the show, to the sunny break allowing sitting outside drinking an excellent beer pre-show right through to the final discussions with the band late that night it was perfect.
We managed to sit through the soundcheck which let us know that the sound on the record was reproducable live which allows us to have heard at leats a couple of songs live twice - priceless.
The show was pretty crowded, I guess buzz brings out people including fools who refuse to shut up especially during the support band who were pretty good. Alt-J played through the album and a suprising amount of people knew lyrics and sang along. It is hard to choose favorite moments though of course Tesselate was transcendal and Matilda was beautiful.
The sound was great and it really hit home just how many great songs are on the album.
Side note the band are very down to earth guys who have no arrogance or airs and who love to talk to fans such a great thing to see.

Handmade is the hidden track from the album
Maximo Park played The middle East Downstairs on Monday night, at the start of the night it seemed horribly quiet but by the time we had suffered through the two abysmal support bands thankfully the place had filled out.
Maximo Park have never been a band that were the most popular but have steady stream of support and have continued to create really great music which if you look at the lyrics can really suprise you as Paul Smith uses terms that are pretty erudite and are way beyond the normal garbage espoused by pop bands such as The Vaccines. Then there is also the fact that Smith is pretty acrobatic out there doing scissor kicks and jumps and generally keeps the audience in the palm of his hand.
On Monday they gave us a 21 song set, listed here .
Full of brilliant pop songs with hooks that kept people going crazy and having a really good time the band showed why they are so important.
Girls who Play guitars, Limassol, Apply some Pressure, books from boxes adn the kids re sick again show that they consistently create strong powerful songs which have the power to make you smile, want to move and raise your spirits. Lets hope its not another five years before they come back.
Talking about long time since a band has played, the Jesus And Mary Chain played The Paradise Tuesday and Wednesday, again pretty low attendance, what the heck is with Boston not knowing when a good thing is happening?
When the show started the band looked so old unassuming and I did wonder if this was going to be less than brilliant. It is probably the brilliance of the original songs but hearing songs like Sidewalking, Some Candy Talking , Just like honey and Reverence. However when they played 'Never Understand' it was transcendental and made e remember exactly why I hold these grumpy temperamental freaks to my heart with awe and wonder. and yes it felt just as wonderful the second night and of course Jim Reid had to throw the odd hissy just to prove he existed.
Such Wonder!
On a different note , Alt-J, a band from Leeds play Boston Monday the 17th.
Alt-J play music that really has quite a different structure to most current songs and the vocals have a almost falsetto note. As always Leeds provides music that goes where others do not helping the landscape keep fresh I am looking forward to this concert very much.JaneInMAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01799790795219591771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4632044949502485085.post-79801738950160868522012-01-14T18:22:00.000-08:002012-01-14T19:15:43.559-08:00Upcoming concertsyeah I know this assumes someone else reads this but..............
upcoming in Boston despite the fact that so many bands are tending to avoid Boston

arriving at The Lily Pad Samantha Crain on February 3rd. Looking like someone in the crowd rather than a pop star but with an amazing voice and personable stage presence that has gathered fans like First Aid Kit this gig is worth your time

go see Cate Le bon TT's on February 8th, charming, talented and worth a night out.

We totally fell in love with Slow Club at SXSW 2009, at long last they are playing Boston at TT's. Great on record they produce a knockout show. A duo if Charles and Rebecca they gel like superglue. Rebecca has been known to drink a little and it seems every guy on the UK indie scene has a little crush on her. SXSW 2010 when they closed out the Saturday night Rebecca was wrecked but put on an awesome show, made me laugh and be in awe all at once.

if you have time and know the uk series Come Dine with me watch this and laugh like crazy

At long last The Twilight Sad are about to release their third album - yes the first release was not an album. If you aren't insane like us and joining them in DC they arrive at Brighton music Hall February 26th. The more I listen the more I love this music basically folk music (which you can tell if you see James and Andy do an acoustic set) it is presented as a wall of sound that astounds you.
Their bass player left and Dok joined on keyboard and Johnny from Take A Worm For A Walk both of who are now integral parts of the band.

Just before SXSW Bombay Bicycle Club come back over to the US they play the Middle East Downstairs on March 9th. stunning band - so young you can barely believe that they have three amazing albums and many EPS under their belt. such talent so young. If you ever want to figure how music talent spiders through a family look up Jamie MacColl - yes THAT MacColl.
listen below and if this song isnt about early morning sex then my mind is just too much in the gutter.

Also coming so look them up Dry the River Not sure I am comfortable yet with Murph opening his problems to the world but so so happy to see them slap the NME and all doubters in the face, the boys came back with a vengeance.

Emmy The Great - Virtue totally love this album and find more to adore the more I listen, Dinosaur Sex is just perfect.

Fight Like Apes - The Body Of Christ And The Legs Of Tina Turner again they produce punchy perfect music with an absurdist title. I just wish hey toured the US at least once or a million times.

Now my two cheats - actually released in 2010 but I was absurdly slow

Endor - Endor you should have heard PopCop expounding on this band and now hear my please - listen and love. able to be found on bandcamp the best way to buy music.

My First Tooth - Territories not quite sure how this love started but this album was amazingly great. Find them on the Alcopop label.

Sam Duckworth - The Mannequin AKA Get Cape Wear Cape Fly sweetly endearing and life affirming

Telekinesis - 12 Desperate Straight Lines- yes an American - or more precisely its Michael Benjamin Lerner. Hard to pick a track but listen to Car Crash or Dirty Thing and not smile and sing a long a little and you must be dead.

Tom Vek - Leisure Seizure - wow when we thought he had disappeared the king of synth came back with a wonderful album

Yuck - Yuck - taking the best from Cajun Dance Party , that is Daniel Blumberg and Max Bloom, indeed Daniel also being Oupa which started as Yu(c)k. This band came to SXSW and then toured the US allowing us all to see how brilliantly songs like Rubber and Suicide Policeman sounded live.

being pushed elsewhere as 2011 but we know they were 2010 but still loved Kid Canaveral Shouting at wildlife and Admiral Fallow's Boots Met My Face.

you may notice I was lucky enough to have seen most of my picks live if not this year in previous years.
also pretty good was Wild Beasts Smother, Friendly Fires Pala, The Joy Formidable The Big Roar though not totally lovedJaneInMAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01799790795219591771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4632044949502485085.post-71742181643982841092011-11-23T15:22:00.000-08:002011-11-24T11:04:43.256-08:00Gigs 2011to misquote from 'A Tale of Two Cities'
it was the best of years for gigs and it was the worst of years.
2011 was the year LiveNation came in puts its brutal finger round the neck of live music in Boston and throttles it to a horrible mangled mess.
FUCK YOU LIVE NATION MAY YOU ROT IN HELL.
We are way down in our concerts only 69 this year.
We saw gigs by our absolute favourites Twilight Sad and The Wombats and that included very special SXSW gigs from The Sad and an amazingly wonderfully intimate sets from The 'bats.
We saw Mystery Jets, Telekinesis and Bear Hands again
We got to finally see Bombay Bicycle Club after listening to them for five years and MANY MANY times so much they now recognize and joke with us.
We also got to see Yuck, weird situation the progenitor of Yuck Cajun Dance Party makes me foolish in adoration. So amazing to talk to Daniel, who seems shy and Max was so amazingly friendly Iam for ever in his debt.
We got to see Admiral Fallow,Kid Canaveral, withered Hand and King Creosote for the first time and fell in love. King Creosote in Boston astounded me beyond words so that their gig is seared in my mind in awe. Weird because Kenny is such a down t earth bloke and not someone we would be normally throwing back pints with but I bow before his musical genius.
We saw Alessi's Ark many times and loved her down to earth humility and honesty, she went from nice music to must go see her when she is near.
We got to see Emmy The Great in a random CMJ hit and run gig and found she lived up to her hype. I find it impossible to dislike a woman who treats the subject of date rape as an opportunity to show a man that a woman has control of her body and should be treated with respect.
We saw the death of Glasvegas, the gig in Boston was brutal and humiliating in its awfulness.
We got to see Pulled Apart By Horses and loved their huge energy, sorry still dont love their music.
The Indelicates hit the USA and my love for them grew in leaps and bounds, when I saw them at SXSW Simon scared me, this time I realised he is a sweet teddy bear.
I realised The Vaccines and Brother were a total hype taht we coudl forget.
We got to see Eddie Collins again, wow what a comeback and he played my favourite song, Don't Shilly Shally - oh wow fan girl time!
so my quick review less than I wanted but the highs were high so perhaps I am not so sad.JaneInMAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01799790795219591771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4632044949502485085.post-20975074672287274482011-10-09T16:20:00.000-07:002011-10-09T16:29:09.138-07:00The Indelicates Visit the USSo The Indelicates have once again come over to the USA, not the first time BUT it is the first glorious time they will make it to New England.
And not ONCE but TWICE, they play the Cantab Lounge in Cambridsge on Thursday and The Speakeasy in Providence RI on Friday.
We saw The Indelicates at SXSW in 2008 http://www.flickr.com/photos/31046907@N00/sets/72157604402541731/with/2390933904/
and I blogged about how much I loved their album Songs For Swinging Lovers noting it as one of my favourites of 2011.
From the press release I quote 'Essentially the joint project of Simon Indelicate (formerly a performance poet and author of ‘The Book Of Job: The Musical’ – revived in 2011) and Julia Indelicate (an acclaimed documentary photographer) The Indelicates are a piano and guitar-led pop/rock act from Sussex, UK. Taking their musical cues from folk and classical sources - as well as the broad spectrum of British indie rock – they write melodic, edgy and intellectually coherent songs that have been consistently well-received in the UK and abroad.'
But the reason I love them is their wit, their satire and their refusal to accept.
Listen and love and go see them on Thursday and Friday.

JaneInMAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01799790795219591771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4632044949502485085.post-15361068129509597532011-09-10T09:53:00.001-07:002011-09-10T10:12:05.622-07:00The Demise of Dancing JesusAccording to the music companies there was a huge success this week but I see it as a huge fail.
===========================================
http://www.mi2n.com/press.php3?press_nb=145746
Following a joint investigation by BPI and IFPI into a music-based internet discussion forum called Dancing Jesus, the site administrator and one of its most prolific uploaders known as "Trix" were yesterday arrested by the City of London Police.
In a simultaneous action, American Homeland Security seized the site's server in Dallas where the content was being hosted.
Dancing Jesus is renowned for offering access to predominantly music files which have been uploaded without the permission of the copyright owner. The site specialises in leaking pre-release material.
The City of London Police are now progressing this enquiry.
============================================
I have visited Dancing Jesus for years now, not to steal music there were better ways to get music but the passion and breadth of knowledge on the board was amazing. In 2006 a bunch of folks posted about this amazing young band that just won the Road to V contest and posted some demos. There began my knowledge and path to loving Bombay Bicycle Club.
Also found Milburn providing many many bsides and obscure tracks to melt your heart.
Mumm-Ra including their The Dance On The Shore EP and The Dance In France EPs.
I was A Cub Scout, Jeremy Warmsley, Johnny Flynn, Patrick Wolf, Micachu, Forward Russia, Foals, Little Man Tate, Reverend and The Makers, Bromheads Jacket, the Long Blondes, The Duke Spirit, The Pigeon Detectives, The wombats, Dirty Pretty Things, belatedly to love The Libertines, Maximo park, The Rifles, Sky Larkin Wild Beasts, Johnny Foreigner, Brakes, BSP, The Rifles, The Holloways, Komakino, belatedly Elle Milano, Cajun Dance Party.
http://www.last.fm/user/Janeinma/charts
the music I listen to I listen to because of that board and those people. The music I buy the concerts I go to 95% because of Dancing Jesus.
I can only speak for myself but that board drove me to buy more music than I had in years and to support bands in ways that I would not have done otherwise.
Every year before I went to SXSW I would post my short list of British bands and ask for people who had really seen and heard these bands to guide my choices.
And isn't it hypocritical for bloggers and critics who rarely pay for any of the CDS they listen to to berate folks for wanting to listen to music before they buy it?
I am so sorry Music Biz you may be celebrating but I am sobbing and feel so bereft.JaneInMAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01799790795219591771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4632044949502485085.post-45964319396060188562011-09-05T13:22:00.000-07:002011-09-09T10:00:42.331-07:00Bombay Bicycle ClubWhatever people may say about me, I think it is clear I love music.
I love a lot of music but I have bands that I love having never really know - Cajun Dance Party - Daniel is a bit weird but if you listen how could you not forgive that and others that I love and bands that go way up there into my totally awesome level.
The Cribs went right up there to awesome then Johnny Marr broke my heart and dragged them to the gutter. Time waits to see if they can regain their power.
Then The Twilight Sad, a band that when you tune in you would do anything for - bastards where is your next album don't you understand I am going through withdrawal and suffering worse than any junkie.
Then as the title might suggest there is Bombay Bicycle Club. Seriously awing folks way back more than 4 years ago I started to follow these guys without any hope of seeing them, then SXSW happened and I got to see them 4 times in one week.
This week a new target is hit BBC play Boston - negatively as a support band but I challenge anyone that sees them not to fall as totally and utterly under their spell as I have done.
I see a lot of Two Door Cinema Club fans being blown away. The show is sold out so I really hope peopel aren't arseholes. Meanwhile on Wednesday we will be road tripping to get to see BBC headlining at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
I so want this to be awesome and I know the guys on stage will cooperate I just hope the audiences do too.
Funny story at SXSW: after the last BBC show where we were talking to BBC we noticed Mark Divine and Andy from The Twilight Sad in the audience completely out of their minds drunk. I was trying to help Divine out seeing he was getting maudling and noticed Ed looking on in amazement, so I went to tell him this was The Twilight Sad's drummer and he just looked blank and said who - minor scolding ensued. As I knew I love BBC but my boys from The Sad will ALWAYS come first.
JaneInMAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01799790795219591771noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4632044949502485085.post-64388369736073075932011-08-13T15:34:00.000-07:002011-08-13T15:50:11.027-07:00King Creosote Boston - WowI feel so negligent.
Lets be honest going to see Matthew And The atlas made me feel jaded and hateful. I had no expectations for Kenny aka King Creosote. When I walked away from this concert I felt I had been lucky to be there that I had just seen an amazingly honest amazing and beautiful performance.
King Creosote and Jon Hopkins Diamond Mine is a laid back album with some posituve notes but the night left me gasping. The whole performance was worth noticing but when Kenny sang 'Your Young voice' the emotion the honesty and the whole tenor of the performance left me gasping in amazement and speechless. videoing the song always leaves you detached and not appreciating it but that this performance was not caught takes my heart and throttles it with pain. I felt dazed afterward, applause was a understated way to respond to such a performance. Then lets go to the other extreme at the end of the night Kenny left us with his rendition of Francie and Josie's 'La di da' song. This vaudeville like song which coaches such a hilarious concept in such veiled terms is fun to watch on youtube but an experience live.
Kenny is a legend in Scotland and a incredibly down to earth man.
I can totally understand both the adulation and approachability of this man come record label hero.
Nobody noticed this concert but it is one I feel awed to have been at and truely thankful for.
real music is out there its just a matter of finding it. Kenny, you awed me and I am pretty jaded.
